Desert Teen Pens 50-Day Devotional as Tribute to Peers

Bermuda Dunes, CA (October 24, 2019) – Eavan Gilhuly, an 18-year-old recent graduate of Desert Christian Academy in Bermuda Dunes, has written an inspirational and heartfelt devotional, a publication that provides a specific spiritual reading for each calendar day. Gilhuly says the book, entitled Recognize, was written as a tribute to her graduating class of 2019, and she presented it to them at a retreat last spring.

“It all started in April of my junior year, when my pastor told us to turn to a passage in the Bible, and I suddenly realized I had highlighted much of that exact passage and had also written some commentary on it,” explains Gilhuly, who graduated in May. “As I further scrolled through my Bible, I realized there were more pages like that, with arrows connecting passages and themes. I thought, well this isn’t an accident, so I’m going to dig down deeper into what this might mean. That’s what inspired the name Recognize.”

The book is structured so that each devotional day begins with a Bible verse, followed by Gilhuly’s thoughts and feelings about that verse and then a subsequent journal prompt. She says it was her pastor who suggested the format, with an emphasis on “God,” then “you,” and then “them.” While she enjoyed writing each of the fifty entries, Gilhuly says her favorite devotional is Day #3: Lamentations 3:22-23.
